1944

When Columbia signed Shemp Howard to his own starring series of two-reelers (Shemp had supported other stars in their own series for the studio), he was forced to share billing with El Brendel. Brendel, who had a series of his own, was already appearing in two-reelers paired with Harry Langdon, who also had his own series at the studio. The studio seemed desperate to find Brendel a partner who would click.

Unfortunately, the pairing of El Brendel and Shemp Howard fails to click. Brendel would finish his series with Langdon for two more titles, while Shemp would go on to star in another handful of shorts (sometimes paired with burly Tom Kennedy) before signing on as 3rd Stooge...the role he was born to play.
